The Purpose of The Crossing

Small Group Discussion

  1. What does it mean to worship God in spirit and truth?
    • What do you notice about this passage?
    • What questions does it raise for you?
  2. How would recognizing that God the Father is the source and object of true worship affect how we worship?
  3. Does the fact that worship is not limited to a geographical location minimize the importance of physically gathering for worship? Why or why not?
  4. It is important to serve in our area of giftedness. Rather than draining us, our spiritual gifts energize us.
    • Do you know how the Lord has wired you to serve in his church?
    • Familiarize yourself with the various gifts by reading the lists in
      • Romans 12:3-8
      • 1 Corinthians 12:28
      • Ephesians 4:11
      • 1 Peter 4:10- 11
    • Have any of these ever been manifested in your life and ministry?
  5. If you do not know how God has gifted you, here are some questions to help you sort through the options:
    • Do you gravitate toward speaking opportunities or serving opportunities?
    • What needs do you tend to notice in the church?
    • What types of ministry energize you?
    • How have mature believers affirmed your ministry?
    • How has God blessed you in your efforts to serve the church?
    • What has been the most fruitful?
  6. Paul says that pastors’ purpose is not to do all of the ministry’s work themselves but rather ‘to equip the saints for the work of ministry’ (Ephesians 4:11).
    • Do you think of Pastor Scott as the sole “minister” of the church or do you see yourself as a minister too?
    • Are you willing to let him and other mature believers in the church train you for ministry?
    • What effect would it have on the church if Pastor Scott had to do it all himself?
    • What if everyone chipped in?
  7. Are you serving at The Crossing in some capacity?
    • If you are not serving, how would you like to get involved?
    • Do not sit on this. Make your desire to serve known to your small group leader or Pastor Scott.
  8. Read Acts 1:8.
    • What does it mean to be a witness?
    • Where in your life are you connected with others such that you could influence them with your faith?
    • What keeps you or others from talking about God or sharing the Gospel?
  9. Someone has said that the reason why more Christians don’t share their faith is because of fear.
    • What do you think Christ-followers are afraid of when it comes to being witnesses for Him?
    • How might the power of the Holy Spirit help alleviate your fear to live on mission this week?
